Percentage who say US is on the right track hits record low under Trump: poll | The Hill

“Nearly 70 percent of voters say the U.S. has “pretty seriously” gone off the right track under President Trump, a Politico/Morning Consult poll released Wednesday found.”

“Of those surveyed in the May 29-June 1 poll, 31 percent said they thought the U.S. was on the right track, making it the lowest mark recorded in Politico/Morning Consult weekly polling since Trump took office in early 2017.”

“The 31 percent figure is a dip from last week’s poll, which found 34 percent of people thought the country was on the right track.”

“The last time their polling found this many voters thought the U.S. was on the wrong track was in November 2016, shortly after Trump was elected. “

Biden begins to map out ‘revolutionary’ agenda, reimagining his presidency amid national upheaval – The Washington Post

Screenshot

“As Joe Biden’s general election campaign has revved to life amid an extraordinary swirl of national upheaval, the presumptive Democratic nominee has begun to sketch out a dramatically different sort of presidency than the one he had envisioned when he secured the nomination two months ago.”

“The turmoil across the country, punctuated this week with authorities’ use of force against peaceful protesters near the White House, has caused a rethinking for a candidate who once promised donors that under his administration “nothing would fundamentally change” and who, just 11 weeks ago during his final primary debate, offered himself as a pragmatist, unlike his socialist rival Sen. Bernie Sanders, declaring: “People are looking for results, not a revolution.” “

False claims and disinformation are the central feature of Trump’s presidency – The Washington Post

“The president’s technique — refined over half a century in public life — is relentless and unforgiving: Never admit any error, constantly repeat falsehoods, and have no shame about your tactics.”

“From the start of Trump’s presidency, The Fact Checker team has catalogued every false or misleading statement he has made. As of May 29, the count stood at 19,127. That works out to about 15 claims per day. But the pace of deception has quickened exponentially. He averaged about six claims a day in 2017, nearly 16 a day in 2018, and more than 22 a day in 2019 and 2020 so far. Indeed, the president made more false or misleading claims in 2019 than he did in 2017 and 2018 combined.”

“The Right Rev. Mariann Budde, the Episcopal bishop of Washington, was seething.”

“President Trump had just visited St. John’s Episcopal Church, which sits across from the White House. It was a day after a fire was set in the basement of the historic building amid protests over the death of George Floyd in the custody of Minneapolis police.”

“Before heading to the church, where presidents have worshiped since the days of James Madison, Trump gave a speech at the White House emphasizing the importance of law and order. Federal officers then used force to clear a large crowd of peaceful demonstrators from the street between the White House and the church, apparently so Trump could make the visit.”

“It’s no longer a question as to whether President Trump will exceed 20,000 false or misleading claims by the time his current term is completed. Instead, we have to ask: Will he top 25,000?”

“As of May 29, his 1,226th day in office, Trump had made 19,127 false or misleading claims, according to the Fact Checker’s database that analyzes, categorizes and tracks every suspect statement he has uttered. That’s almost 16 claims a day over the course of his presidency. So far this year, he’s averaging just over 22 claims a day, similar to the pace he set in 2019.”

Tara Reade’s Tumultuous Journey to the 2020 Campaign – The New York Times

“To better understand Ms. Reade’s tumultuous journey to the roiling center of the presidential campaign, The New York Times interviewed nearly 100 friends, relatives, co-workers and neighbors and reviewed court records. What emerged was a shambolic life in which Ms. Reade, through her own pluck and smarts and powers of persuasion, overcame an unsettled and abusive childhood to find opportunities on the big stages of acting, politics and law.”

Biden leads Trump in Post-ABC poll as president’s coronavirus rating slips – The Washington Post

“Americans give President Trump negative ratings for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, and as the crisis has persisted his prospects for reelection in November have eroded, with former vice president Joe Biden now holding a clear lead nationally, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll.”

“Overall, Americans offer mixed assessments of Trump and Biden, and although the presumptive Democratic nominee is viewed less favorably overall today than he was last fall, he fares better than the president on several personal attributes. At the same time, Trump’s supporters are notably more enthusiastic and committed to voting for him in the fall than are those who currently back Biden.”

“Biden leads Trump 53 percent to 43 percent among registered voters nationally.”

Trump’s executive order on Twitter ignores that he’s the real danger to speech – The Washington Post

Screenshot

“By Editorial Board May 30, 2020 at 5:00 a.m. PDT”

” “We’re here today to defend free speech from one of the greatest dangers,” President Trump said on Thursday as he signed an executive order designed to punish social media sites for exercising free speech. To honestly identify the danger to free speech, he would have had to include a mirror in the signing ceremony.”

“The White House has been plotting its assault on Internet platforms for some time now, and the directive marks the first shot formally fired. It comes as a response to Twitter applying a fact-checking label to tweets from the commander in chief that falsely suggested that vote-by-mail is systemically fraudulent. Twitter early Friday rallied rather than retreating, slapping a warning on a presidential tweet for glorifying violence. The tweet from the president, and then from the official White House account, called protesters in Minneapolis “THUGS” and declared that “when the looting starts, the shooting starts.” “
